In Alon Confino's "A World Without Jews," the dynamics of rhetoric as both a historical and contemporary tool of influence come into sharp focus. Rhetoric, the art of persuasive language, has been instrumental in shaping societies, policies, and even history. Confino’s work sheds light on the dual nature of rhetoric, highlighting its capacity for both great good and profound harm.
In recent years, the Fridays for Future movement, inspired by the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, has drawn global attention to the urgent need for action on climate change. This movement, primarily driven by students taking to the streets instead of attending school on Fridays, raises a critical question: does striking make a difference?
In recent years, a wave of youth-led legal actions against national governments has swept across the globe. Groups like Auroramålet have become symbols of this movement, challenging their governments' environmental policies and demanding action on climate change. But how does one sue a state?
When developing new technology, it’s often natural for us to consider its purpose and who it’s intended for. However, we seldomly acknowledge against whom we discriminate through our own limited perspective. Join me on a journey from discriminatory algorithms to racist soap dispensers and why we are in need of diverse development teams.
There are so many things that have an impact on you when you study abroad and people keep talking about how much it changed them and what a great experience it was. However, I am not going to focus too much on the details of my exchange, you have all heard the cliches of how it is an experience of a lifetime, how you will meet a bunch of new friends, and so on. While this is all true, I want to focus more on something that, in my experience people don’t mention as much. I do not feel like I hear a lot about the experience of coming back home to your old routines and life as you knew it, but with new friends and new memories.
From Syria to Turkey on foot, across the Mediterranean and the Aegean to Greece on a raft, on the back of a truck all the way from Hungary to Vienna, and somehow ending up on a train to Malmö... You’ve heard it before, at least that’s what you think. But this story isn’t meant to be a magnet for your empathy - and definitely not your pity either.
While writing the title, I checked Instagram twice, spent 15 minutes texting my friend, and stared blankly at my screen for way longer than I’d like to admit. When it comes to productivity, focus is everything. We want to be able to finish our tasks quickly. We want to be able to complete the projects we start. We want to be able to give our full attention to others. But focus is also difficult. How are we supposed to focus? What do we…um…yes, what do we do to focus?
“Hasta la vista, baby” was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous catchphrase in Terminator 2. As a cyborg sent from the future to save humankind, his governing internal AI had managed to reach full sentience and an alarming level of fidelity. How close are we to synthesizing such sci-fi into reality? Let’s play a game. Parts of the following article have been written by an AI. Can you spot them?
It has been more than a year since Russia declared war on Ukraine. We had a conversation with Sasha, a Russian student that came to KTH to study in a Master's program two years ago. Despite her nationality, she has been an advocate against the war and avidly devoted her free time to helping Ukrainian refugees since day one. Here is how the conversation went.
With the rise of tools like ChatGPT and the release of AI-powered tech assistants (like Google’s Bard, Microsoft’s Bing AI Search and even Spotify’s AI DJ), many of us find ourselves with numerous questions. What should we be using these tools for? Can we rely on these tools? Are they really as smart as they seem? And will these AIs rise and become our robot overlords one day?
Today, smartphones are indissociable from us and you surely can’t live without it (Him? Her?) for an entire month. It is indeed useful in order to e-communicate with friends, to spend time on TikTok... But how does it impact our connection with other humans being?
What can students expect their budgets to look like when the inflation is at an all time high? A budget deficit of almost 3 000 SEK, half of income spent on rent and increased food expenses — a budget that is simply not adjusted to a Stockholm student’s living expenses.
Spring is high time at KTH for career fairs: Lava, Fusion, Dagen I, Potential, Moment, MBD - and today BKW, the fair for students at the chapters Materials science (B), Chemistry (K) and Energy and Environment (W)! Osqledaren went on a quick tour and talked to the three project managers.
How do you set your expectations to make sure not to be disappointed later? Which decision-making strategy really is the best? Is it beneficial to make an effort to maximize everything we do, or would it be better to simply choose something that gets the job done?
Sometimes we intertwine the expectations we have on ourselves with our identity. We find comfort in thinking we know who we are based on our experiences. But knowing what you are is not the same as knowing who you are, because that little security blanket that you call self-awareness is nothing short of an illusion that will crumble the second you get hit with the truth/reality: you ain’t shit.
My grandfather always forgets to lock the door and constantly forgets his glasses. Meanwhile, highschoolers join climate strikes around the world and are more well-informed than ever. Should we have a maximum voting age and let more young people vote instead? Or should everyone get to vote, regardless of their age, whether they are seventeen or seventy?
Your wellbeing is important. During your time at KTH, it’ll be influenced by the physical and psychosocial environment at the university. It will impact your academic performance, but also how you’re flourishing as a student. We all need to invest time and effort into student welfare!
Cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are powered by blockchains, the revolutionary, decentralised databases using peer-to-peer networking and hashing to perform trustless transactions in innumerable applications with smart contracts that… Sorry, what? What does that even mean?
The effects of climate change are already felt by many and the science behind it has been clear for long, yet emissions are increasing steadily. Change is needed, agreements need to be made and organisation is of the utmost importance. As the question is global, we look towards the UN and the recent COP26.
Public awareness about eating disorders is increasing, as more people speak out about their own experiences. These personal testimonials are of huge value, but they may leave out key facts. As a result, there are still many misbeliefs about eating disorders.
I can’t remember a time when headlines weren’t regularly filled with depressing titles. Warnings of a bleak future. About worsening ecological conditions or the increasing threat of global warming. The IPCC reports. The recent extinction of the white rhino. The bleaching of coral reefs worldwide. Not exactly instilling hope, especially in those who will inherit this world: Us; the youth.
Starting August 1st KTH once again made its facilities open for students after being closed since March 18th. Usually, new students can expect weeks of activities held by THS and the different chapters to make the start of their studies as good as possible – but what does a reception look like during a pandemic? Osqledaren has spoken to Gokul Panneerselvam, Head of THS International, and Johan Hamredahl, Reception Coordinator at THS, to find out how the national and international reception have been adapted to this year’s circumstances.
As a member of the ever growing, although still quite esoteric, vegan society, one is oftentimes faced with challenging social dilemmas. When unnerving or uncomfortable situations arise, soldiers of social sanity sometimes falter: to serve the vegan Supreme Court or to make militant maneuvers, correcting errors, subjectively. Setting out to explore this space of sparse, spread out opinions, two vivacious vegan representatives from Osqledaren, acquired some confusing content, composed rather concisely, combined with continuous commentary, as follows:
