Pub Reviews

For years, we have been able to peacefully live in our little island of bliss (and parties and alcohol): Kistan 2.0, the bestest of all student pubs. With unlimited space, unlimited selection of drinks, and an unlimited great vibe. But that time is slowly coming to an end. We have therefore been going on pub raids to other pubs on the main campus and made some notes on where we love hanging out and why. And because sharing is caring, we would love to share our notes with you! Of course, we will be completely unbiased in our review.

We are Hannah and Mackan, just super regular students of the IT chapter most of the time, who are not in any kind of position to think that Kistan 2.0 is definitely better than every other pub everywhere.

When we are not being completely unbiased about what pub is the best pub at KTH, Hannah is the chapter president of the IT chapter, and Mackan is president (Klubbmästare) at one of the IT chapter’s Masteries, TMEIT. One might therefore be able to tell that we, occasionally, are so biased towards Kistan 2.0 that we are completely capable of rating all other pubs very fairly.

Will they live up to Kistan’s high standards? Can they make a proper mojito? And most importantly, how much can we order before we get barstopped?

Do you want your chapter’s pub to be reviewed? Fear not - we are going to release more pub reviews in the next issues of Osqledaren. And if the web team manages to make the website function, get ready for some web-exclusives as well.

Skål – For science, obviously.

Fysiksektionen

Mastery: fkm*

Locale: Konsulatet - all the way back at the M-building. This walk was way too long for us, but since they are the only ones open that day, desperation makes us do things we would never do otherwise

Opening days: Tuesdays (and sometimes Fridays)

Drink Selection: 3/5

They have a pretty decently stocked fridge of ciders and beers, however we do wish for some more variety. Additionally they have the essential spirits and liquors for a bar, which means that you also have the opportunity to have mixed drinks.

Price: 5/5

Very cheap.

How long they stay open: 2/5

They usually close early, it appears to us that not a lot of students want to drink on Tuesdays (not that we understand that). However this means that you have the rare opportunity of taking part in Stad i Ljus and still getting 8 hours of sleep before your morning class.

Food (variety & quality): 4/5

Nice food, unfortunately not the biggest portions but it’s fun that they have a varied food every week that is actually homemade. Of course their make-shift stove plates could never compare to Kistan 2.0’s fully stocked kitchen, which is why we are forced to give them only a 4. They also sell Billy’s, as any good chapter pub does.

How willing are they to make an annoying shot?

They were down to do it, we managed to get them to do a mix of 6 different spirits and liqueurs that they mixed up and divided between 8 shots, they supported us doing it as well.

Vibe

They are pretty chill and friendly. You get a friendly greeting at the door and then when you enter, people are sitting by tables or on the sofas and having some drinks. There is no real dance floor or large number of people standing at the same time, except for in the queue to the bar. It was very cozy, until later in the night, when they sometimes queued up some classic student songs like Das Rote Pferd or Källaren, which got people a bit more active and moving around for a while, after which the night finished off with a pretty large Stad i Ljus circle.

Alcohol-free selection

They had alcohol-free alternatives for the patch drinks, and some alcohol free alternatives just in general.

Patch selection

They of course have the iconic Schrödinger’s cat patch which I found quite tasty. Later in the night we decided to take it again, since it was so good, but this time mine tasted kind of bad??? We have no idea what they are doing, but they should learn to mix consistently tasting patch drinks.

The particle accelerator patchdrink is kinda cool with the glow stick in the drink, though the patch is not too amazing. Other than these we don’t remember any other great patches, so they can’t have been too cool if there were others. Overall pretty good job with the patches, to create a cult classic patch like Schrödinger's cat is no easy task.

Availability:

Usually it's fine to enter unless they have already closed. As a non-chapter member it is generally not too much trouble to get in most of the time, but they have stopped us in the door before at some point when we were too many people at once.

They are also friendly to non-Swedish speakers, no international student is going to feel unwelcome when they get there. There is however the problem of them not announcing the pubs in English, which would probably help them get more people to their pubs.

Their announcements are however easy to find, they post on Facebook in time and post on Instagram from time to time and are also available on pubquery.

Sektionen för Medieteknik

Mastery: MKM

Locale: META

Opening days: Thursdays

Drink Selection: 3/5

They usually have drinks specifically for that pub and they are usually quite good. They also have a good selection of beers and ciders, but you can’t order drinks out of the DKM fridge because Media seems to be in an abusive relationship with Data. They should consider marriage counselling.

Price: 5/5

Because of their seemingly abusive relationship with Data, Media doesn’t really gain much by selling alcohol expensively so all their drinks are very cheap.

How long they stay open: 4/5

They are usually open relatively late, but we have occasionally been forced to move to another pub after an early Stad i ljus.

Food: 1/5

They don't really make food (except for the legally mandated two food options, aka Billy’s and Toast).

Vibe

Sometimes they are a bit empty at the start, but it livens up later in the evening and generally has a pretty good vibe. Sometimes, you get media students dancing a few of their many nølledances (they have way too many to choose from).

Alcohol-free selection

They have alcohol-free versions of the drinks they offer for pubs, which is clearly advertised.

Patch selection:

They usually have a few patches that they are selling, however, not to flame, but their patch quality is sometimes pretty bad. One of the patches we received literally fell apart the first time it was touched. They are great at designing the patches, but knowing photoshop doesn’t help them in learning how to make them last.

Availability:

They announce their pubs on their instagram account, but they are not on pubquery.
We have rarely had problems getting in as a non-chapter member
They are friendly to non-Swedish speakers. Their pub announcements are in both Swedish & English, good job MKM!

Hannah's Mojito Review

What do you get when you mix Lime, Sugar, Mint, Rum and Soda water in a complicated way? The best drink that I, Hannah, could ever imagine of course. Therefore it is important that every pub can provide me with a good mojito. So at MKM, I asked for a mojito, upon which they told me that they don't have mint, but said they could fix something. They then added Minttu and vodka into a glass but then realised that a proper mojito doesn't contain vodka. l told them it was fine, secretly knowing that a Mojito with Minttu is sacrilegious enough, so they then added lime juice and bubble water. The bartender was very sweet and apologetic and she did really try her best with the cards she was dealt.

How close is it to being a mojito:

This is being calculated by giving one point per correct ingredient and subtracting a point for every ingredient extra that is not supposed to be in there:
Lime + Bubble water - vodka - Minttu = 0/5

Drink as a whole: 3.5 / 5

Bartender: 5 / 5, very nice.
