Where to put the (nuclear) waste?

Einstein once said: »The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything.« This saying have lived up to its expectations. For many, nuclear energy equates tragic explosions. The bombs on Hiroshima & Nagasaki, the nuclear hype during the cold war, the accidents of Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima all contributed to the development this collective mindset. So undoubtfully, the problem to dispose nuclear waste is surely one of the biggest challenges facing mankind. Läs mer >

A closer look at Project China

Project China is a collaboration between two Swedish universities, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), both located in Stockholm, and two Chinese universities, Tsinghua University in Beijing and Fudan University in Shanghai. Today the project is Sweden’s largest international student project.

The project is an opportunity for students and companies to meet and learn from each other. The goal is also to increase the insight and understanding of the two countries similarities and differences both with regard to culture and business routines. Läs mer >

Running Through the Green:

The Stockholm Marathon and the Changing Face of the City

On May 28th I will join 20,000 others looking for purpose, pain, and euphoria by running in the 42 km Stockholm Marathon. Although it’s humanity’s oldest form of high-speed and completely carbon-neutral transportation, running is still a lifestyle for the slightly insane. This year marks the 99th anniversary of the 1912 Olympics and Stockholm’s first marathon. During training I decided to run the original marathon course from Stadion through Solna to Sollentuna Kyrka. The course is nearly the same today – a testament to the conservation effort of the city and citizens of Stockholm. But the once dense forest is now just a curtain for the freeway and the chirp of crickets is replaced with the hum of traffic. Läs mer >

NordBEC winners fly to Turkey

After winning the local tekBEC and the regional nordBEC engineering competitions, two teams representing KTH will compete against regional winners from all across Europe in the European BEST engineering competition (EBEC) in Istanbul. EBEC will be a 10 day event in the beginning of August and the heat will be on. Osqledaren had a chat with the teams about competing and engaging themselves besides the studies.

It is Wednesday morning as I walk down the familiar stairs in Nymble to meet David Hultman, member of the winning team in the nordBEC team design competition in Trondheim. I got an email about two weeks ago saying two teams from KTH won the regional final and that it is a ”pretty big occasion”. Läs mer >

Meet Felix Malmenbeck, Head of THS International

Empty bottles, overflowing cupboards, heaped tables and countless boxes are what you find in the office of our very own Head of THS International, Felix Malmenbeck. A Wednesday in February I had a chance to have a short talk with him on one important issue i.e. International Students and THS.

Felix is from the physics chapter and he is an experienced campaigner as he started working on things related to the international students since his first year at KTH. Expressing his vision he said, »International students are the integral part of KTH and since the first day I am trying my best to increase their participation in all matters. Translation of material into English, restructuring of societies and opening new opportunities are all efforts in this direction.« Läs mer >

North Africas News Feed: The Role of Social Media in Political Revolutions

Facebook events, status updates, and YouTube clips are changing the world. Tools that we normally use to talk about last night’s party are now employed to organize rallies and protests in the tumultuous uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa.

In the 2010 film, The Social Network, we see the creation of Facebook amidst shots of dorm room sleepovers and wild drinking games. Seven years after the rapid spread of the nascent social media network depicted in the film, I open up a newspaper and see a picture of Tahir Square in Cairo, Egypt – a photo of protestors surrounding trash that spells out the word, »FACEBOOK«. The Facebook movement has taken full flight. No longer is Facebook merely a platform in which to »poke« attractive girls and advertise keggers; Facebook, during the last few weeks, has played a paramount role in the toppling of governments and dictators. Every click we make…

Every web page we visit, every click we make, every picture we download and every file we upload has an impact on our environment and the worst part is, we are totally unaware of this alarming situation.

To make us realize these new dynamics of our present day world, greenalytics.org is working with the slogan, »unveiling the carbon footprint of the web«. This whole application is a project of Center for Sustainable Communication at KTH. Fortunately, we had a chance to meet one of their researchers and the developer of Greenalytics, Jorge L. Zapico. Describing this whole effort he said that, »Greenalytics tries to make us understand the carbon content added in our environment by the internet. It does it by matching data from Google Analytics and environmental research and then it estimates the carbon footprint of websites, including server, infrastructure and final user«. Läs mer >

Walking in a Wiki Wonderland

Classified government documents, secret high-level informants, online espionage, an elusive leader on the run from multi-national authorities, and a sultry sex scandal. All these sound like ingredients for the 4th installment of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium novels. But in fact this is the reality of Wikileaks and the controversy caused by its recent release of diplomatic cables. The story sounds intriguing—but is anybody really listening? Läs mer >

Exchange Japan gazes east

Are you tired of grinding physics formulas all day and night, and want to work on something more tangible, maybe with an international focus? Then listen up – THS and KTH have plenty of opportunities and international projects tooffer!

A trip down under

»And when the acoustic music plays this place seems to be the cathedral of science,« these were the concluding remarks of Leif Handberg in charge of R1, Sweden’s first atomic reactor. Läs mer >
